Glady Gates loved dogs for as long as she can remember but only became involved with purebred dogs in May 1977 when she received a Keeshond puppy as a Mother's Day gift from her husband and two children. Glady and Kendol’s Chinook of Gates entered his first show after much coaxing from the breeder. In September of that year he became a Canadian Champion at the young age of 8 1/2 months; the seed was planted and he and Glady had lots of fun in the show ring. He won his first Best In Show on “Mother's Day" in May 1980 after winning Best of Breed at the Keeshond Club of Canada's Keeshond Booster. Glady also tried her hand at Obedience and Chinook received his C.D. in 3 straight trials with excellent scores. After acquiring a lovely female from Ontario, Glady decided to try her hand at breeding. Her first litter, born in September 1981, produced Ch. Seawind's Lit'l Bit O'Wrock, a Multi-Best In Show and High in Trial winner producing Multi-BIS offspring. Over the years she has accumulated 38 Best In Shows on her dogs including Ch. Seawind’s Sunshine Man, the Top Keeshond in Canada for 2002; all owner-handled. Glady has bred some of Canada's top winning Keeshonden both in conformation and obedience and Seawind offspring are known in England, New Zealand, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, United States and Canada. Glady has also enjoyed judging Puppy Sweepstakes at the Heritage Trail Keeshond Club Specialty in April 1986 in Ashland, Mass and the Buckeye Keeshond Club Specialty in December 1998 in Cleveland, Ohio. In April 2002, Glady was honored to be invited to judge the Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes at the Keeshond Club of America National Specialty in Frederick, Maryland. At home in Nova Scotia Glady judged Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes at the Norwegian Elkhound Specialty in August 1999, the Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever Specialties in 1997 and again in 2001, the Puppy Sweepstakes at the Maritime Group Seven Specialty in 2004, the Flat-Coat Retriever Puppy and Veterans Sweepstakes, and many all-breed Sanctioned Matches and Fun Matches. Glady was one of the judges for the first Annual Atlantic Puppy Awards held in PEI in 2000, and the first Annual Atlantic Top Dog Awards held in 2008. She is a Life Member of the Halifax Kennel club, the Canadian Kennel Club and the Keeshond Club of Canada. Glady has been married since 1957 to Don Gates. They have a son and daughter, three grandchildren and a great grandson. Loving dogs as she does, Glady enjoys every minute she spends with her furry creatures. She is now trying her hand at Agility with a puppy from her last litter, Ch. Seawinds Commotion On Da Ocean, otherwise known as "Decker". "Decker" (Ch. Seawind's Commotion On Da Ocean) was born on March 30, 2004 to my German Import Ch. Leah of Seawind vomAlten Nierstal and Multi BIS Ch. Seawind's Sunshine Man, Top Keeshond in Canada in 2002. Although Decker was not the "show" pick of the litter, he was definitely staying home at Seawind because he reminded me so much of my very first Keeshond, his Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather, Multi BIS Ch. Kendol's Chinook of Gates, CD. Decker entered his first show on February 12, 2005 and in three shows he finished his Championship on June 5, 2005 with a Best of Breed and First in Group.
